„Pro Patria et Libertatae”

The historical travelling exhibition will include period costume copies, reproductions of weapons, as well as panels and a short film on the life of Rákóczi.

Ferenc Rákóczi II (1676-1735), Hungarian nobleman, leader of the Rákóczi War of Independence, prince of Transylvania, imperial prince. He was elected Prince of Transylvania in 1704 in Alba-Iulia, and was the last to hold this office. His name is closely linked to the Rákóczi War of Independence, which he launched in 1703 to regain full independence from the Habsburg Empire. He was elected Prince of Transylvania and Hungary in accordance with this aim, which was perfectly fitting, as Zsigmond Rákóczi was a descendant of the Transylvanian Prince, and his great-grandfather and grandfather, György I and György II Rákóczi, and his father Ferenc I Rákóczi, were also Transylvanian princes. However, his fight for freedom did not achieve the desired result.

In the eyes of Hungarians, he is still remembered as a leader of pure spirit and honour, because after the peace treaty of Satu Mare he refused to accept the public pardon offered to him and stood by the cause of Hungarian independence. The peace of Satu Mare, which ended the War of Independence, was a compromise that prevented Hungary's absorption into the Habsburg Empire, and the constitution of the Order survived, if only in appearance, until 1848.
