Girls, women in the art of Imre Nagy

Imre Nagy had an extremely close and special relationship with the nature around him, as is evidenced by his artworks and by the people who knew or met him. The most recent exhibition of the artist's works, entitled Animals 2019, organised by Eszter Túros at the Jigodin Gallery before the outbreak of the pandemic, provided an insight into this relationship.

"He always had a female relationship..."

The passionate desire for nature obviously includes the sensitive and understanding observation and depiction of women and femininity. Our exhibition aims to explore the diversity of the relationships that Imre Nagy had with various women, and with the female sex in general. The exhibition will focus on the artist's sometimes surprisingly different but invariably vivid prints, and we will also present some of his lesser-known paintings.

We recommend that visitors view our selection from at least three angles: the representation of the different stages of women's lives and the different qualities of femininity in their work, and the transformation of the painter's language. The latter is underlined by the juxtaposition of an early nude from Kecskemét and the unmistakable, multi-figure compositions of later years. Thirdly, we also want to get a sense of how Imre Nagy progressed from studies and sketches to engravings and oil compositions on certain themes.
