In the framework of the Hungarian Genius Programme, we commemorate Szőcs János, the former museologist and director of the Szekler Museum of Ciuc, who was a dedicated researcher of the past of Ciuc and the history of the Csángó people of Gyimes. He collected and published numerous data and documents about the Csángó of Gyimes and Moldavia, the history of the settlements of Ciuc (especially from the time of the Tatar invasions in the 17th century), the history of elementary education in the former Ciuc, the history of social movements in Szeklerland and ethnic relations.
In the context of our exhibition, we recall Szőcs János' archaeological activities, since in the period 1980-1984 he also worked on the archaeological excavation of Cibrefalva (the former tenth of Mihăileni), which was destroyed by the Tatar invasion of 1694. The material of the exhibition is based on the findings of these archaeological excavations.
The objects on display are an attempt to give a sense of the everyday life of a late medieval/early modern Szekler settlement: a varied assortment of stove tiles, clay pots (different shapes and sizes, different uses, black and red, unglazed and glazed pot fragments), iron objects (knife fragments, fire-brands, horse tools, moulds for making lead bullets, etc.).
Most of the objects on display recall the last moments of the village, which was deserted in a sad event 330 years ago (17th century), but some of the objects date back to an earlier period of everyday life in the village (15th-16th centuries). At the same time, some of the documentation from the 1980-1984 archaeological excavations (excavation diary, site plans, photographs) will be presented.
The exhibition is curated by Darvas Lóránt and Kosza-Bereczki Judith, archaeologists of the Szekler Museum of Ciuc.
The exhibition is open until 29 April 2024 at the Szekler Museum of Ciuc.
