Preserved sacred art treasures

Saving the values and treasures that are part of our cultural heritage is a responsible and noble task for those who are called upon to do so. Restoration requires, among other things, refined manual skills, infinite patience, deep humility and respect for the object. At the same time, scientific and artistic knowledge, knowledge of historical periods and the use of appropriate techniques are indispensable. The objects on display were thoroughly documented, examined, disinfected, dry and wet cleaned, neutralised, the paint was removed, missing parts were filled in and retouched.

Through the description of the restoration process and the photo documentation, visitors and readers alike will be able to gain an insight into the secrets of the workshop, admire the manuscripts and fragments (including many Hungarica and unique specimens) from the 13th and 17th centuries, 15th-19th centuries, which are so valuable from a cultural and historical point of view. They include old books (bibles, psalms, domus histories) from the 15th and 20th centuries, paper and parchment documents from the 18th and 20th centuries, as well as sculptures, panels, crucifixes, icons, vestments, funeral banners and chalice covers from the 17th and 20th centuries.

The paper and leather artefacts were restored by Éva Benedek, the panels and sculptures by Zsuzsanna Mara. The conservation of the textiles is the result of their joint work.
