The permanent exhibition about the history of Miercurea Ciuc is the result of 5 years of work by museologists, and it is presented in seven rooms, covering an area of about five hundred square metres. During the preparations, intensive scientific research work was carried out, nearly a hundred informants were interviewed, thousands of objects were collected from the field or brought in as donations. The exhibition spans the period from the early Middle Ages to the changes of 1989, almost a millennium, and is primarily aimed at the people of Ciuc, at strengthening their local identity. It is difficult to build a future without knowing our past.
Visitors can learn about fascinating topics such as the circumstances of the settlement of the Szeklers of Ciuc, the secrets of the Franciscans of Șumuleu-Ciuc, the atmosphere of the old fairs of Miercurea Ciuc. You will find out why a 150 kg coat of arms is placed under the ceiling, what the head of the county wore a hundred years ago, and what kind of bottles were used to fill the old Ciuc beers. It's shocking to see the decay of a small town in the 20th century, but also fascinating to see the constant renewal, the will of the community to live, the many ways of finding happiness.
Hundreds of original artefacts tell stories of the past, and there are stories to listen to, short films, photographs and models to complete the experience. The exhibition provides information in three languages, and is an exciting adventure into our community's past for children and adults alike.
Museologists, restorers, engineers, architects, visual designers, editors, translators, film-makers, artists, advertising specialists, and many more, all of whom have worked together to produce this exhibition.
To whom we owe the greatest thanks, they are the old citizens of Miercurea Ciuc. Their donations, their advice, their memories are the basis of our collection of town history and from them we have selected the material on display.
Born at the crossroads of roads, the location of our town favoured its development, but it also caused its partial destruction more than once, being in the way of the wars. Our exhibition "At Crossroads - The history of Miercurea Ciuc" aims to show this city, exposed to dangers and reborn time and again.
