The research of the wall of the parish church from Sâncrăieni (2002)
Colleagues: Miklós Rácz, Boglárka Tóth

During the 2002 renovation of the church, the plaster was knocked off without any archaeological supervision. In a parallel direction with the renovation we tried to document the parts that could still be seen. On the Southern wall we succeeded in opening an early – Gothic window. Another Gothic – window was discovered in the Baroque wall that was above the medieval entablature. West from the entrance we documented the corner of a higher – lying window. Under the window on the medieval wall we found the trails of two carvings. After their restoration they turned out to be the stones of a relief with two figures.  One of them represented a well – carved figure in tunic without head, above which, on a separate stone, a bigger bearded head could be seen. The buttresses on the Western part of the nave turned out to have been added to the walls later on.

On the wall of the tower one could see very well the trails of the medieval periods’ roofing.

We discovered that the tower that was thought to be medieval was in fact built during the 18th century. This was also confirmed by the dendrochronological investigations.

During the documentation of the church we found the portions of the rounded arched gate frame from the age of the Árpáds that was thought to be lost, and also an unknown holy water holder carved from one piece of stone.
